Seneste fremskrivning foretaget af Energistyrelsen viser at Danmark vil overopfylde både EU-målet for vedvarende energi og EU-målet om at nedbringe udledningerne fra de ikke-kvoteomfattede sektorer i 2020.

Udledningerne af drivhusgasser har været faldende siden starten af 1990’erne.
I reduktionen på 40 pct. medregnes bidrag fra kulstofbinding i jord og skove.

Danmark har over for EU forpligtet sig til, at vedvarende energi skal dække mindst 30 pct. af det såkaldt udvidede endelige energiforbrug i 2020. Basisfremskrivningen viser, at Danmark i 2020 vil have en VE-andel på over 40 pct. i 2020 og dermed overopfylde målet med stor margin.

Forbruget af vedvarende energi er steget støt siden 2000. Frem mod 2020 accelererer denne udvikling. Den største omstilling vil ske i el- og fjernvarmesektoren, hvor der forventes en yderligere omstilling til biomasse og udbygning med vindkraft. Vindkraft alene vil kunne dække omkring 54 pct. af elforbruget i 2020 mod ca. 40 pct. i dag.
